SALISBURY, Md. (March 5, 2022) – Junior
Audrey Heaberlin and first-year
Emma Eguia each won their singles flights in straight sets, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team lost a tight 5-4 encounter against Salisbury in a non conference matchup played at the Salisbury University Tennis Center. With the loss, the Ducks record now moves to 1-2, while the Sea Gulls improve to a perfect 4-0.
"Today was a great first match for us" stated head coach
Arik Zeevy. "Our goal this weekend is to get match experience and see what we need to work on as a team. Today was a great battle and everyone competed at a high level."
The first two doubles matches of the day were split as Salisbury's Veronica Culler and Katherine Tamesis defeated senior
Agatha Malinowski and sophomore
Polina Odintseva 8-5. The Ducks tied it up when Heaberlin and first-year
Isabella Dona doubled-up Sarah Dover and Elizabeth Christine by a count of 8-4. Third flight doubles went the Shoreman's way by a score of 8-4 as Hannah Carter and Sarah Cooper bested junior
Juliette Marchisio and Eguai.
Top flight singles was a highly-contested contest as Malinowski won in clutch fashion 6-3, 6-7 (3-0), 10-7 over the Sea Gulls Veronica Cuellar. Heaberlin then kept the momentum on the Ducks side with her straight set win.
Salisbury regained the overall points lead in third, fourth, and fifth singles flights. Odintseva battled hard losing a 6-2, 0-6, 6-2 match. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Christine and Sarah Cooper both came away victorious in straight sets over the Ducks' Dona and Marchisio, respectively.
Eguia's straight set win closed out the scoring for the Ducks, resulting in the 5-4 final count.
Up Next: Women's Tennis will continue their Maryland weekend when they take on Washington College tomorrow, Sunday Mar. 6. The Ducks will be competing against the Shoreman for the first time in program history.
