The Basics
  • The lead: Senior Eddie Sot won the individual title to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology golf team to a first-place finish Sunday at the Garden State Collegiate Classic, hosted by Drew University.
  • Team Score: Stevens (289-300=589) - first place of 11 teams
  • Location: Flanders Valley Golf Club - Flanders, N.J. (Par 72 -6,780 yards)
  • Short Story: Again facing challenging conditions, Sot carded an opening-round 76 and then turned in one of the best rounds in program history with a 68 to finish even for the tournament and atop the 60-golfer field. The 68 matched his own record for the lowest single round in program history. His 4-under par 68 in the final round set a new record for the lowest round versus par in program history. He carded four birdies in the opening round and carded five more and an eagle (on the 16th hole) in the final round to finish even for the tournament. Already the career and single-season leader in tournament wins, the victory secured his fourth championship of the season
  • The Leaderboard: The Ducks won their second straight team championship, finishing 10 strokes ahead of Franklin & Marshall College. Westminster (607), Swarthmore (623) and Drew (633) rounded out the top-five. Individually, Sot finished three strokes ahead of Franklin & Marshall's Michael Gallagher. The Diplomats' Jas Fuhrer (+4) took third with Westminster's Michael Bell, F&M's Shane Lawler and the Ducks' Miles Philion all tied for fourth, five shots off the pace.
  • Of note: This was the third team championship this season and the 11th under head coach Charles Papendick.

The Finishes
  • Philion had an outstanding opening round, firing a 2-under 70 for one of the best single rounds of any golfer in the field. He finished 6-over on Sunday to five shots off the pace. The Delhi, New York native carded five birdies in the opening round and two in the final round to finish with seven for the tournament.
  • Sophomore Gus Vickers and senior A.J. Iacobellis finished ninth and 10th, respectively, to give the Ducks four finishers in the top-10. Vickers was even in the opening round and then 6-over in the final round to finish +6 for the tournament. He finished with four birdies for the tournament, including one on the par-3 14th. Iacobellis, meanwhile, turned in one of three par-or-better rounds in the tournament, on Saturday, shooting 1-under par on the strength of four birdies.
  • Junior Eegan McDermott finished just outside the top-10, placing 11th with a 151, finishing 7-over for the tournament. He totaled two birdies for the tournament.

From the Greens (Head Coach Charles Papendick)
  • "I'm simply amazed at our players' resolve in some of the most challenging conditions. Each of our five players contributed so much during this event to allow us to come out on top for a second straight week against another strong field."
  • "Eddie Sot's round of 68 was nearly impossible today based on the conditions, but he showed why he's the best player I've coached at Stevens and probably the best in program history."
  • "Congratulations to our entire team and to Eddie for winning our second event this spring, while consistently shooting lower scores."

Up Next
  • Golf returns to the links on Monday, Apr. 18 for the F&M Spring Invitational, hosted by Franklin & Marshall College. The single-day event is being contested at the Bent Creek Country Club in Lititz, Pennsylvania.
