HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 27, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team extended their win streak to six and clinched the No. 1 seed in the MAC Freedom tournament on Tuesday, April 27. They defeated Wilkes at home by score of 5-1 to improve to 8-4 overall and 6-0 in MAC Freedom play.
The two sides played the match until a winner was decided and did not play all nine matches. It was a resumption of play from their match that was delayed due to weather on April 9.
The Ducks won two out of three doubles matches and then won three singles matches to secure the win. Wilkes fell to 7-6 overall with the loss and 4-1 in conference play.
At doubles, senior
Agatha Malinowski paired with junior
Audrey Heaberlin won 8-2 from the first position and sophomore
Polina Odintseva paired with junior
Juliette Marchisio won 8-0 at third.
At singles, senior
Alexis Fuda clinched the match from the third position in a thriller 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. She trailed 1-4 in the final set before winning five straight games to get the win. Heaberlin won 6-3, 6-2 in the second spot and first-year
Emma Eguia won 6-3, 6-1 at sixth.
"I am proud of the girls for their mental fortitude in a challenging environment today. Alexis fought back from being down 1-4 in the the third set to win 6-4, Agatha fought back from dropping the first set to leading 4-2 in the third, and Polina fought back from being down 3-5 in the first set tiebreaker to winning it 7-5," said head coach
Arik Zeevy. "Conditions weren't easy but everyone did their best to stay focused on what they could control, and to keep fighting one point at a time. We are looking forward to our last home match of the season on Saturday and to honor our seniors, Agatha and Alexis."
