Baseball Falls to Catholic to Start NCAA Regional Action

The Ducks fell by a score of 7-1 in their first NCAA Tournament game since 2014

WINCHESTER, Va. (May 20, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to Catholic 7-1 in their first game of action at the NCAA Regional hosted by Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia. It was the team's first NCAA Tournament game since 2014.

Junior Michael Reyes led Stevens with two hits on the day, going 2 for 4 at the plate. Sophomore Christian Kreiser doubled for his only hit of the day and scored the team's lone run. Junior Justin Doyle (4-2) got the start on the mound and received the loss for the Ducks.

"We ran into a tough pitcher today in Catholic's Tucker Alch" commented head coach Kristaps Aldins. "He really had all his pitches working and kept our hitters off-balance the majority of the afternoon. Nevertheless we had a few chances offensively, especially later in the game. Justin Doyle had his good stuff today and ran into some trouble in the 4th. The inning ballooned on us after a call at the plate that didn't go our way. We will get some rest and be ready for the 11 am early game against St Joseph's - Long Island."

The game was scoreless through the first three innings and Doyle had given up no hits until the fourth and had three strikeouts. The Cardinals took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the inning. They scored the first run on an RBI single to center field and then added three more to make the score 4-0.

The Ducks cut into the lead in the sixth when Kreiser scored on a wild pitch to make the score 4-1. Catholic responded with two more runs in the bottom of the inning. First-year Dante Pozzi singled to center field to drive in two more runs and make the score 6-1.

An RBI double in the eighth inning made the final score 7-1.

Junior Tucker Alch (10-2) pitched a complete game for the Cardinals and earned the win, giving up just one earned run and striking out 10 batters. Stevens fell to 29-15 on the season with the loss and Catholic improved to 30-12.

Up Next: Stevens takes on St. Joseph's College-Long Island in an elimination game, tomorrow, Saturday, May 21. Start time is set for 11 a.m. at Bridgeforth Field in Winchester, Virginia.
