Baseball Falls to Misericordia in MAC Freedom Semifinals

The Ducks fell by a score of 6-3 in the third and final game of the series

DALLAS, Pa. (May 9, 2022) – The No. 3 seed Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to No. 2 Misericordia in game three of the MAC Freedom Semifinals by a score of 6-3, Monday, May 9, on the road. The loss eliminated the Ducks from the postseason and Stevens fell to 29-14 and Misericordia improved to 28-15.

Junior Michael Reyes went 2 for 4 and led the Ducks with two hits and graduate student Hunter Silvernail and graduate student Thomas Paulich each had an RBI. Junior Anthony Pron entered the game in the third inning and pitched five innings, striking out four batters and giving up just two earned runs.

Both sides went scoreless through the first two innings until the bats picked up for each team in the third. Stevens took a 3-0 lead in the top of the inning. Silvernail was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to start the inning and then Paulich drove in a run on a fielder's choice for the second run of the game. Senior Ryan Wall scored the final run of the inning when Paulich was caught in a run down.

Misericordia answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the third to take the lead for the first time in the game. The Cougars scored four runs on four hits and four different players drove in runs to make the score 4-3. After four-straight scoreless innings, Misericordia added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Junior Brendan Gray singled up the middle to make the score 6-3 with one inning to go. The Ducks were unable to score in the top of the ninth and Misericordia secured the win.

Graduate student Alex Smith (1-2) was credited with the loss for Stevens and junior Joe Valenti (6-2) pitched six and two thirds' innings to close out the game for Misericordia and received the win.

"Our student athletes played their hearts out today and this weekend. Anthony Pron's performance was reminiscent of last year's in a similar circumstance. We had some opportunities to go up late, but the ball just didn't bounce our way," said head coach Kristaps Aldins. "We walk away from this MAC Freedom postseason with our heads held high. We strongly believe our body of works deserves consideration for an NCAA at-large bid.

Up Next: Stevens will wait to see if they can earn an at large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
