Women’s Tennis Drops 5-4 Decision to Stockton

Ducks claim three singles wins in setback to Ospreys

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 10, 2022) – Graduate student Agatha Malinowski joined first-year Stephanie Untermeyer and sophomore Emma Eguia in picking up singles victories, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team fell to Stockton University 5-4 Saturday in a non-conference matchup on the Stevens Tennis Courts.

Sophomore Isabella Dona partnered with first-year Anya Sharma in winning at third doubles to account for the other victory for the Ducks, who dropped to 0-1 on the year.

Sophia Pasquale had wins in both singles and doubles competition to lead Stockton, who improved to 1-0. The Ospreys have won the last two meetings between the programs.

In doubles play, Dona and Sharma scored an 8-6 win over Brynn Bowman and Carlee Cristella. The Ducks' victory was the lone match in doubles play that did not require a tiebreaker. Malinowski and Untermeyer dropped a hard-fought 8-7 decision against Sarb Devi and Lily Muir at first singles, with the Stockton duo securing the match a 7-5 decision in the tiebreaker. The Ospreys scored their second victory of the day at second doubles with Pasquale and Audrey van Schallkwyk topping senior Audrey Heaberlin and junior Polina Odintseva 7-1 in the tiebreaker to secure an 8-7 win.

In singles play, Stevens claimed wins on lines one, two and six as the team split the six singles flights. Malinowski scored an impressive 6-3, 6-0 win over Muir at first singles, while Untermeyer claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win over Devi on line two. Eguia would pick up the final Stevens victory of the day with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Jenna Bryszewski at sixth singles. Stockton secured the match with wins at third, fourth and fifth singles. After dropping the opening set, Odintseva rallied to force a third set against van Schallkwyk at fourth singles, but ultimately dropped the final set via a 6-2 decision.

Up Next: Women's Tennis heads to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on Sept. 17 for the two-day MAC Individual Championships. In just two years in the conference, the Ducks have claimed three singles crowns and five doubles titles at the individual championships.
