No. 3 Men’s Soccer Runs Streak to Seven with 1-0 Victory over Widener

Andino's highlight-reel goal proves to be the difference as Ducks win seventh straight

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 24, 2022)  – Senior Bruno Andino's highlight-reel goal in the 45th minute proved to be the difference as No. 3 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer defeated Widener University 1-0 Saturday in a non-conference matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

With the teams seemingly set to reach the intermission deadlocked and scoreless, Andino drove a header backwards into the middle of the goal to put Stevens in front. After a Widener foul, sophomore Adam Berrocal began the critical play by driving a right-footed service deep into the six, where Andino was able to sneak through the pack into a dangerous area

The goal would be all the Ducks needed as senior Justin Cross made a career-high five saves to post his third career clean sheet. The Kendall Park, New Jersey native continues to lead the MAC Freedom with a 0.57 goals-against average.

The victory moved the third-ranked Ducks to 7-0-1. After a season-opening draw at Manhattanville, the Ducks have won seven straight matches. Dating back to last season, Stevens is 13-0-3 over its last 16 contests.

Ryan Van Pelt made one save in defeat for Widener, who dropped to 3-4. The Ducks' victory snapped Widener's three-match winning streak. The Ducks have won three of the last four meetings between the teams.

The Ducks largely controlled the field position battle and finished with an edge in shots. However, Cross was called upon to make four second half saves, including two in the final four minutes, to preserve the victory.

Stevens had two chances over a 60-second span midway through the second half. Graduate student Adam Silva ricocheted a shot off the near post in the 58th minute and senior Emerson Kuzemka rang a shot off the crossbar in the 59th minute.

The Ducks survived a late bid by the Pride to tie the match in the 89th minute. The Pride earned a corner kick and, competing against the clock, Widener rushed to deliver a service, however, they were whistled for a foul in the box and Stevens reclaimed possession.

Unsung Hero
  • Junior Fritz Kabeiseman led a contingent of Ducks that held Widener's leading scorer, Sean Fatiga to just a single shot on goal.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens finished with a 12-9 edge in shots, although Widener held a 5-2 advantage in shots on target.
  • The Ducks also held a 6-3 margin in corners. Five of Stevens' six corners came in the first half.
  • Andino's marker was his third goal of the year to set a new career high. All three of his goals have been game-winners.
  • Berrocal has recorded a goal and an assist in each of his two seasons on Castle Point.
