ANNVILLE, Pa. (October 15, 2023) - Sophomore Taylor Knox scored the tying goal while graduate Lynda Farinella scored the game-winning goal as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team defeated Lebanon Valley College (LVC) 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in MAC Freedom play.
The Ducks (11-2, 3-0 MAC Freedom) continue to keep winning, extending their season long winning streak to eight games. It is the longest winning streak since 2021, when the Ducks won 11 straight. It is the teams first 2-0 conference start, also since 2021. With the win, Stevens remains in first place in the MAC Freedom, tied with DeSales. Lebanon Valley (8-6, 1-2 MAC Freedom) have now lost two of their last three matchups. The Ducks have now won two in a row over the Flying Dutchmen.
Junior Emily Smart recorded the first two shots of the game as she tested the LVC keeper eight minutes in, but her shots were stopped. The score would remain tied at zero after the first. In the second. It was LVC who struck first, as the Flying Dutchmen got on the board in the 24th minute. Just a minute later, the Ducks were awarded a penalty, which was converted by Knox to tie the game at one. The score remained the same at the half.
Farinella had a shot attempt stopped just minutes into the second half as the Ducks looked to take the lead. Sophomore Lily Wierzbicki was forced to make a stop with just seconds left in the quarter to keep the score tied. A minute and 43 seconds into the fourth quarter, Farinella tallied her team-leading ninth goal of the season on an assist from first-year Lauren Flynn. The Ducks were able to see out the victory as they continue to keep winning in the heart of their season.
