HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 18, 2023) - Graduate Lynda Farinella scored her tenth goal of the season while senior Dani Hessels scored the game-winning goal as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team defeated Arcadia 2-0 on Wednesday night in MAC Freedom play.
The Ducks (12-2, 4-0 MAC Freedom) continue to keep winning, extending their season long winning streak to nine games. It is the longest winning streak since 2021, when the Ducks won 11 straight. It is the teams first 4-0 conference start, also since 2021. With the win, Stevens remains in first place in the MAC Freedom, tied with DeSales. Arcadia (8-8, 2-2 MAC Freedom) have now lost two of their last three matchups. The Ducks avenge their 1-0 loss in last year's MAC Freedom Semifinal game against the Knights.
It was a quick start for the Ducks as they were able to jump out to an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. Off of a penalty corner, first-year Lauren Flynn ripped a shot that was stopped by the Arcadia keeper, but Farinella, the reigning MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Week, was there to clean up as she put the ball in the goal to put Stevens in front. Just 30 seconds later, sophomore Lily Wierzbicki made a stop to keep Stevens in front. In the second quarter, the Ducks had eight shots but were unable to extend their advantage as they maintained a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The Ducks were able to double their advantage eight minutes into the second half. Sophomore Gabi Maroney brought the ball in from the left side and played a perfect crossing pass to Hessels, who only had to guide the ball into the empty net to put Stevens up 2-0. Despite being on the back foot for a majority of the remainder of the game, Stevens was able to grab the shutout and defeat Arcadia to keep their winning streak alive.
