HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 7, 2023) – Seniors
Elle Maggio and
Meg Dion each finished with nine kills as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team swept Montclair State University (25-13, 25-19, 25-12) Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at Canavan Arena.
Junior
Cleo Shannon had eight kills and three blocks and sophomore
Vivian Lisboa added four and three for the Ducks, who won their second straight to improve to 9-6.
Skye Ramsey and Rachel Curran each had nine kills to pace Montclair State, who dropped its seventh straight to fall to 8-11. The Ducks have won three straight, and 11 of the last 12, against their Route 3 rival.
Prior to the match, the women's volleyball program recognized its five-member senior class:
Kristy Chen,
Madison Sappia, Dion, Maggio and
Liz Patterson for their accomplishments and contributions to the program.
The Rundown
- Stevens turned in one of its most efficient offensive performances of the season, committing 14 attack errors across the three sets. The Ducks hit a blistering .424 in the opening set and .344 in the third to post commanding wins in each frame.
- Dion set down the first point of the match, converting a feed from sophomore setter Gabbi Roberts. A Montclair error and an ace from junior Bailey Axelrad opened an early lead. However, Montclair climbed back into the set with four straight points to take its only lead of the frame, because Stevens answered with six straight points – with points coming from three different players – to take control of the set. The Red Hawks would close within one, however a 12-1 run broke the set open and allowed the Ducks to take a 1-0 lead.
- The second set provided the most back-and-forth action between the teams. While the lead only changed hands once, the Ducks' longest run of the sequence was early in the frame, when three Montclair errors sparked a 5-0 run. Montclair kept it close, pulling within three points after a Lisboa attacking error, but Stevens scored five of the last seven points to end any potential comeback hopes for the visitor.
- Despite the 13-point victory for Stevens in the final set, the teams exchanged the lead early and often before the Ducks pulled away. The teams alternated four-point swings that saw the Red Hawks grab an early 5-4 lead only for another four-point run by the Ducks put them in front for good at 9-6. Consecutive blocks from Lisboa and Shannon sparked a 6-0 run that broke the set open, which was followed by an 8-1 run that put the set out of reach. A kill from Dion and another Axelrad ace closed out the victory.
