Women's Volleyball Sweeps Marymount in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament

The Ducks will face No. 1 Juniata or Penn State - Altoona tomorrow night at 7 p.m.

HUNTINGDON, Pa. (November 16, 2023) – Sophomore Vivian Lisboa tallied a career-high eight blocks and added five kills as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team defeated Marymount (Va) 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-17) in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday afternoon on the campus of Juniata.

The Ducks (22-9) have won a NCAA Tournament game for the second year in a row. Stevens is currently on a five-game winning streak dating back to the regular season. The MAC Freedom Champions will play in the Second Round tomorrow, either against Penn State-Altoona or a rematch with No. 1 Juniata. Marymount ends the season with a 17-15 record.

The Rundown

  • Stevens had a .148 hitting percentage, while Marymount hit .000 percent.
  • Stevens got out to an early 5-3 lead, capped off by an ace from first-year Molly Harris. The Saints then responded with three-straight points to take a 6-5 lead. Later up 10-9, Stevens had a 4-0 run, consisting of three Saint errors and a kill by senior Elle Maggio. Later at 20-15, Stevens again went on a mini 4-0 run, with senior Bailey Axelrad tallying an ace and Lisboa getting a kill on the streak. Stevens would take set one 25-18.
  • Marymount got out to a 4-2 lead in the second set, but Stevens scored five of the next six to take the lead. Sophomore Paulina Miller tallied two aces. After junior Cleo Shannon recorded a kill to make the score 8-6, the Ducks' next seven points either came from Marymount errors or kills from Maggio. Later up 22-20, Stevens rattled off the final three points to take the set. Lisboa and Shannon each had kills to help the Ducks close out the frame.
  • With a 2-0 lead, Stevens found themselves in front 9-1 to kick off the third. Maggio and Lisboa each had a kill while senior Liz Patterson recorded an ace. The Saints were able to come back and got to within one point at 15-14. Stevens would not allow Marymount to take the lead, as they scored 10 of the final 13 points to win the match. Senior Meg Dion tallied two kills and Miller had another ace to help Stevens close things out and advance in the tournament.

  • Lisboa also added an ace and two kills.
  • Axelrad totaled 12 digs.
  • Maggio had a team-high six kills and added two blocks.
  • Shannon recorded four blocks, three kills, and two digs.
  • Sophomore Gabbi Roberts had 14 assists.

For the Opponents

  • Kaitlyn Doyle had 10 kills.
  • Maya Harris recorded 10 digs and nine kills.
  • Alexis Franklin tallied 26 assists.

Up Next

  • Women's volleyball will either take on Penn State-Altoona, or the defending champion and No. 1 Juniata, tomorrow night. The Ducks and Juniata met earlier in the season, with Juniata winning 3-1.
