ALBANY, N.Y. (November 18, 2023) – Senior Luke Hoerle of No. 12 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling recorded three wins by tech fall to lead the Ducks Saturday at the Armbar at the Armory event held at the Washington Avenue Armory.

Sophomore Nico Diaz, senior Stefan Major and junior Harrison Hinojosa each won two matches for the Ducks, who fell to No. 11 Vermont State University Castleton (22-14) and No. 5 University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (27-15) and defeated Cornell College (22-20) across the three duals. The event also featured The College of New Jersey and York College of Pennsylvania in the second of a two-day collegiate showcase event.

The event marked the first meeting between Stevens and Castleton since Feb. 10 2021, which was the first athletic event for the athletic department coming out of the pandemic. Stevens and Cornell met for the first time since Jan. 12, 2017, and for just the third time in the all-time series.

The Rundown
  • After Castleton opened the match with a tech fall at 125, Hoerle recorded the Ducks' first win of the day with a tech fall over Andrew Marchese. The Westfield, New Jersey native compiled seven takedowns, the final of which came with 67 seconds left in the match to earn the stoppage. Diaz followed with his first win of the day with a dramatic 8-6 victory over James Rodriguez, with the winning takedown coming with just six seconds left in the match.
  • Castleton scored wins at 149 and 157 before junior Chris Stathopoulos drew the Ducks within one (12-11) with a narrow 4-3 decision over Nick Roeger with a takedown in the final minute proving to be the difference maker.
  • Back-to-back decisions at 174 and 184 went Castleton's way before junior Blaise Wagner defeated Darby McLaughlin 8-6. Wagner amassed five points in the second period to create a little separation between the wrestlers. An 8-0 major decision for Castleton at 285 provided the final margin.
  • Against Cornell, it was again Hoerle getting the Ducks on the board with a 24-8 tech fall over Eli Sneed. Hoerle compiled an impressive 11 points in the opening period and then added 10 more in the second, followed by a takedown 30 seconds into the final period to earn the stoppage.

  • Major followed with a 12-0 shutout of Brian Petry to add four points to the Ducks' total with junior Joel Martsinovsky recording an 18-1 tech fall over Cael McLaren at 184 for the Ducks' final victory of the match.
  • In the final dual of the day, Hoerle capped off his strong day with a 19-3 tech fall over Quintin Wolbert. Hoerle scored 16 of his 19 points in the first period and then earned a takedown 38 seconds into the second period to cap his third tech fall.
  • Diaz followed with a 15-2 major over Sam Lorenz, using eight points in the final period to cement the bonus-point victory.
  • Consecutive wins for LaCrosse followed at 149 and 157, before Hinojosa notched his second win of the day with a 7-3 decision over Cole Hansen, scoring six of his points with a pair of takedowns in the third period.
