HOBOKEN, N.J. (December 2, 2023) - Sophomore Dorothy Loffredo recorded a double-double as she scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team fell to No. 11/8 Trinity (CT) 70-59 Saturday afternoon inside Canavan Arena.
The Ducks (5-3) lost back-to-back games for the first time this season, with both teams being inside the top 15 in both rankings. The loss also marks the Ducks' first home defeat of the season, falling to 2-1 in Hoboken. Stevens is now 0-4 all-time against Trinity. With the win, the Bantams improved to 5-2 on the season.
It took a bit for the game to fully develop as the teams combined for just 10 points inside the first five minutes of the game. With Trinity up 8-4, first-year Paige Gorczyca made a sweet outside jumper to get the Ducks back within two, and sophomore Olivia Schubiger also added a nice jumper on the next possession to tie the game. With 27 seconds left in the quarter and just one second on the shot clock, Schubiger nailed a triple to tie the game at 16, which would be the score at the end of the frame. First-year Kay Decker and junior Lucy Alberici each picked up two fouls in the quarter. Despite the Bantams scoring the first four points in the second, sophomore Leyla Castro hit a triple that pulled Stevens back within one. Stevens took the lead at the 6:47 mark as Loffredo made two free throws to go up 21-20. After that, Trinity started to get hot behind the arc as they made two-straight in part of an 9-1 run for the visitors. Castro made a layup with one second left on the clock as Stevens trailed 34-26 at the break.
The Bantams opened the second half on a 7-3 run to create even more separation from the Ducks. At the 5:21 mark with Stevens trailing by 16, Loffredo made a strong basket to keep the Ducks in it. Still down by 16 towards the end of the quarter, the Ducks used a 8-0 run to cut the deficit and half to get back in the game. Alberici made a jumper and added two free-throws, Castro added a free-throw, and Decker capped it off with a three-pointer at the end of the quarter as Trinity led 53-45 going into the fourth. Loffredo made the first points of the fourth to get Stevens within six. Over the next four minutes though, Trinity went on a 14-2 run to regain their big advantage. Stevens called timeout to stop the run and responded with a 8-1 run to make the score 68-57 in favor of the Bantams. There would not be enough time left for the Ducks to get any closer, as Trinity held on for the 70-59 victory.
