BROOKLYN, N.Y. (December 5, 2023) - Junior Jack Spellman set the program's career blocks record, while head coach Bobby Hurley reached 250 career wins as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team defeated Brooklyn College 75-62 Tuesday night.
Spellman passed Patrick Sabatino for the program record, doing so in just three seasons in Hoboken. Spellman has amassed 189 blocks during his time at Stevens so far. Hurley, already the winningest coach in program history, adds to his impressive total with his 250th career win. The Ducks have now won seven-straight games, improving to 7-1. Stevens is off to their best start since the 2019-2020 campaign, when they went 7-0 to open up the season. Stevens improves to 7-3 all-time against the Bulldogs, including winning the last five. Brooklyn falls to 1-8 with the loss.
The two teams fought hard in the first half as there wasn't much to split them. Down 3-2 early, graduate student Stephan Braunstein made a three to add to his impressive total this season to give the Ducks a 5-3 lead. He would make another at the 16:24 mark, putting Stevens up 12-9. On the other end, Spellman notched his first block of the night on the Bulldogs next possession. Later in the half, first-year Xander Sinh made a layup that gave Stevens the lead back, but it was quickly taken back by Brooklyn. Trailing 27-25 at the 4:18 mark, Spellman notched his third block of the game, which put him at 189 for his career. The Ducks finished the half on a 9-0 run, highlighted by a three from senior Mike Goodall and a jumper from Braunstein, as the Ducks maintained a 34-27 advantage at the break.
18 seconds into the second half, Braunstein hit another three that gave Stevens a double-digit advantage. On the next Duck possession, he made another triple as Stevens went up 40-27. A few minutes later, Goodall gave the Ducks back-to-back baskets as they went up 15. Senior Conor Coffey then got into the three-point action as he put the Ducks up 18. Stevens would keep up the pressure throughout the half and although Brooklyn made comeback attempts, the depth and the strength of the Ducks became too much, as Stevens rolled to a 25 point victory for Hurley's 250th career win.Â
