Coffey’s Career Day Sends Men’s Basketball over FDU-Florham

Senior leads Ducks with 24 points as Ducks earn conference win

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 1, 2023) – Senior Conor Coffey poured in a career-high 24 points as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team defeated FDU-Florham 64-57 Wednesday night in a MAC Freedom matchup at Canavan Arena.

Senior Brett Bischoping matched his career high with 13 points, while also pulling down a career-high 10 rebounds for his first career double-double and junior Mike Goodall added 10 points for the Ducks, who won their second straight to improve to 10-11 on the year and to 7-5 in conference play. The Ducks moved a half-game behind second-place Lycoming, who was idle tonight.

Matthew Johnson had a team-high 16 points to lead FDU-Florham, who lost its fifth straight in falling to 3-18 on the year and to 2-10 in the MAC Freedom.

Coffey finished a highly efficient 10 for 14 from the floor, including 4 of 6 from behind the arc. The Monroe, New York native also snagged five rebounds and had three assists. Coffey netted 15 of his points in the first and then scored nine points on 4 of 5 shooting in the second half as the Ducks held off FDU-Florham down the stretch.

A back-and-forth opening half saw the teams trade the lead eight times and play to six ties. FDU's Brian Nichols hit a long jumper to put FDU-Florham up 24-23, but the Ducks responded with an 8-0 run to jump back in front for good. Coffey began the run with a driving layup and the sequence was highlighted by a 3-point play by Goodall. The late run sent the teams into the intermission with the Ducks holding a 5-point lead.

The Ducks maintained their lead over the final 20 minutes, finally opening up a double-digit lead on a hook shot from Bischoping. The Devils responded with a short jumper from Carson Woods, before first-year Matt Leming answered with a three to put the Ducks back in front by a comfortable margin.

The Devils pulled back to within three points after a triple by Aidan Newman before Leming pushed the margin back to two possessions with another three. Goodall sank a pair of free throws in the final minute as the Ducks closed out the victory.
