HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 8, 2023) – Sophomore
Jack Spellman returned to the lineup and totaled 23 points, seven rebounds and six blocks as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team picked up an important MAC Freedom win with a 68-59 victory over Arcadia University Wednesday at Canavan Arena.
Senior
Conor Coffey had 15 points and junior
Mike Goodall finished with 13 points and nine rebounds for the Ducks, who won their third straight to improve to 11-11 on the year and to 8-5 in conference play. The Ducks remain a game behind Lycoming College, who defeated King's 67-62 earlier in the evening. The Ducks and the Warriors meet in the regular season finale.
After totaling 33 points and 13 rebounds in Arcadia's 74-61 victory over the Ducks on Jan. 11, Jalen Watkins was held to 10 points on 3 of 11 shooting before fouling out. Dom Vazquez had 15 points and Justin Money added 11 for the Knights, who dropped to 11-11 on the year and to 7-7 in league play. Arcadia is a half-game of Misericordia for fourth place in the conference, although the Knights have played one more game than the Cougars. The Ducks' victory snapped Arcadia's two-game winning streak and moved Stevens to 4-1 all-time against the Knights.
Spellman was a force in the first half, scoring 12 of his 23 points and recording four of his six blocks. After Watkins scored the first points of the game, Goodall and Spellman connected for back-to-back threes to put Stevens in front. The Ducks controlled the pace of play and limited the Knights to just 3 of 10 from behind the arc. Spellman would score four straight points to close out an 8-0 run to push the Ducks' lead to 11.
The Knights' bookended 3-pointers to close out the first half and open the second, with Money's basket from long range trimming the Ducks' lead to three. Arcadia would score four straight to tie the game at 37 and the Knights took their first lead since the first basket of the game on a corner three from Joshua Okocha.
The Ducks would sink only one basket from behind the arc, but it came at a pivotal point in the contest. Trailing by one, Coffey lost his footing while driving towards the lane. However, the fourth-year guard maintained his focus and then kept the possession alive, shoveling the ball to Goodall from his position on the ground. In rhythm, Goodall received the pass and buried an open three from the top of the key to put Stevens back in front for good at 50-48.
The Ducks would make 7 of 8 from the line over the final 75 seconds to close out the victory.
