HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 5, 2023) – Senior
Ashley McDermott and first-year
Emily Zgombic each went 4-1 as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team split a pair of duals Sunday at the Stevens Invitational inside Canavan Arena.
Fresh off reaching the 200-career wins milestone, senior
Claire McNeill matched McDermott and Zgombic with four wins on the day. Junior
Alana Schmitt also added four wins on the day for the Ducks, who opened the event with a 19-8 victory over Army, before falling to New Jersey Institute of Technology 16-11 to close out the day. The split left the Ducks with a 12-20 record.
Prior to the matches, five seniors:
Zoe Casten,
Brianna Ellis, McDermott, McNeill and
Keira Mizzi, were honored and recognized for their accomplishments and contributions to the women's fencing program.
"It was a great day fencing Army and having a really competitive match with NJIT," said assistant coach
Linda Vollkommer-Lynch. "All in all, it was a good day, especially for our seniors, who were able to have a home event in front of their friends and family."
Sophomore
Elizabeth MacDonald had three wins at foil, while Mizzi won three times at epee. Junior
Victoria Beke (epee), sophomores
Alyssa Ip (sabre) and
Nerissa Lundquist (sabre) each won twice, while Ellis (foil) and sophomore
Annabelle Crescenzo (foil) each won once to round out the Ducks' victories on the day.
Collectively, the foil group went a perfect 2-0, topping Army 7-2 and NJIT 6-3 to finish the day 13-5. The epee squad split on the day, topping Army 8-1, before falling to NJIT by the same margin to wrap up competition with a 9-9 record. Lastly, the sabre group dropped a pair of narrow 5-4 decisions to post an 8-10 record and a 0-2 mark on the day.
