No. 38 Men’s Tennis Falls to No. 9 Johns Hopkins

EDGEWATER, N.J. (March 10, 2023) – Sophomore Sebastian Wroe and junior Andrew He dropped a close 8-7 (7-3) decision at No. 3 doubles as No. 38 Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis fell to No. 9 Johns Hopkins University 9-0 Friday night in a non-conference matchup at the Edgewater Tennis Club.

First-year Timothy Lau dropped a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 at fifth singles as the Ducks dropped to 2-2. Friday evening's match was just the second all-time meeting between the schools and marked the Ducks' third straight match against a nationally-ranked opponent. The Ducks have four more tilts with teams ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Nationally-ranked Thomas Yu was victorious at both singles and doubles for the Blue Jays, who improved to 5-0.

"Hats off to a very talented Hopkins team tonight," head coach Steve Gachko said. "I was happy with our energy and performance in doubles. We put ourselves in a position to win on all three courts, but Hopkins played the important points a little better. We learned a lot tonight and are motivated to keep making positive progress as we head down to Florida for our spring trip."

Each of the three doubles matches were decided by a combined seven points. On line one, the third-ranked duo of Yu and his brother James defeated the Ducks' top tandem of sophomore Vivek Harinarayan and junior Aashi Kulakarni 8-4. The regionally-ranked tandem of Joe DeMarco and Marco Azar edged the Ducks' team of sophomore Olof Persson and first-year Max-William Kanz 8-7 to claim all three doubles flights.

In singles play, Yu kicked things off for Hopkins with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Harinarayan. The Blue Jays clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-0 victory at second singles by No. 23 Mason Liu. Johns Hopkins won the remaining four singles matches to produce the final margin of victory.

Up Next: No. 38 Men's Tennis heads to Orlando, Florida for four matches at the USTA National Tennis Center. Up first is the second-ever matchup with No. 34 Occidental College on Mar. 12. Stevens topped the Tigers 6-3 on Feb. 17, 2011, in Los Angeles.
