ORLANDO, Fla. (March 14, 2023) – Graduate student
Agatha Malinowski earned victories in both singles and doubles competition, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team fell to Ithaca College 6-3 Tuesday in a non-conference contest at the USTA National Tennis Center.
Sophomore
Isabella Dona also won at fifth singles for the Ducks, who dropped to 0-5.
Taylor Crain and Sabrina Cheung each won twice for the Bombers, who improved to 3-2.
"Today was an evenly contested match and a valuable experience for us," head coach
Arik Zeevy said. "We fought hard, but Ithaca was a little better in the end. Going down 2-1 after doubles put us in a hole that we couldn't quite climb out of. We are improving day by day but still have a long way to go."
Malinowski paired with first-year
Stephanie Untermeyer to score an 8-2 victory at first doubles over Ithaca's top duo of Rebecca Andrews and Zoe Davis. Unfortunately, the victory on line one was the Ducks' lone victory in doubles competition as Ithaca won both second and third doubles by identical 8-2 scores.
In singles play, Malinowski scored a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Andrews on line two, while Dona notched a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Eliana Chelnick at fifth singles. Junior
Polina Odintseva won the first set against Zoe Davis 6-2 on line three, but Davis rallied to win the second (6-4) and third sets (7-5) to narrowly escape with the victory.
The Bombers posted wins in four of the six singles flights to provide the final margin of victory. Ithaca has won the last seven meetings between the teams.
Up Next: Women's Tennis concludes its spring break trip on March 16, taking on SUNY Oneonta in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
