Baseball Sweeps Twinbill with Lehman

Ducks total 18 first-innings runs across two games

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 4, 2023) – Senior Michael Reyes recorded four RBI on three hits across two games as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team swept a doubleheader with Lehman College 18-5 and 15-4 Saturday afternoon at Dobbelaar Field.

The Ducks (6-3) scored 18 of their 33 runs in the first inning of the games, scoring 11 in game one and then pushing seven across in game two.

In the opener, senior Ben Tobio got things started with a leadoff double off Randy Polanco (0-1) which got the Ducks rolling. He would later score after Reyes grounded out to shortstop for his first RBI of the day. Stevens was able to do the rest of their damage with two outs, as the next batter, junior Christian Kreiser, was able to draw a walk and then stole second. Junior Frank Tonina followed with a single. Sophomore Liam DeRubertis then cleared the bases with a two-run shot to left field, but the Ducks weren't done yet. They were able to score four more runs before Kreiser had the second blast of the inning to put Stevens up 11-0.

Polanco took the loss, allowing 12 earned runs over 3 1-3 innings of work.

The Lightning (0-2) got on the board in the fourth inning, as Nomar Rijo and Ranssel Pinedo each had RBI doubles in the frame cut into their large deficit.

First-year Erik Sibbach (2-1) struck out eight batters in five innings of work in his third career start. The right-hander only allowed one earned run on three hits and retired the first nine batters of the game.

The Ducks added to their lead in the eighth scoring four runs off bases loaded to push their lead to 18-5. Sophomore Kirk Kinzler fired a score inning and a third to close the victory.

Game two started in a similar fashion as the opener, as the Ducks jumped on the Lightning early. Tobio had a leadoff double and sophomore Victor Schilleci walked to put the first two batters on. Reyes followed with a single to put the Ducks on the board to score Tobio with the first run of the game. Krieser walked in the next at-bat to load the bases. Sophomore Eli Somers singled to right to advance the runners. The Ducks then strung together more two-out magic as four straight batters reached, with Tobio and Schilleci connecting for consecutive run scoring hits as the Ducks padded their lead to 7-0.

Graduate Josh Casado made his first start for the Ducks and struck out two over one inning. Senior Ryan Shea (1-1) provided four innings of relief for Casado, earning his first win of the season. He struck out seven batters and only gave up one earned run.

Despite not starting, juniors Jack Irby and Jack Stafford provided a spark off the bench for the Ducks, each driving in a pair of runs.

Up Next: Baseball's next scheduled game is on Mar. 11 when the Ducks begin conference play against No. 16/11 Arcadia University in Punta Gorda, Florida. The two teams will play a doubleheader on the 11th, followed by another matchup on the 12th. The Ducks went 1-2 against the nationally-ranked Knights last season.
