Women's Tennis Loses Close 5-4 Match to New Paltz

The Ducks are now 1-7 in non-conference play.

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (April 19, 2023) – First-year Fionna Flores rallied for a three-set victory at sixth singles, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team fell to SUNY New Paltz 5-4 Wednesday in a non-conference matchup at the North Tennis Courts. 

Flores dropped the opening set to Alex Chimenti 6-4, before rallying to win the final two sets 6-4, 10-8 to win her second straight singles match. Stevens dropped to 8-7 on the season.

Tatianna Barnett and Isabel van der Veen each won twice for the Hawks, who won their second-straight match to improve to 10-4. They are now 12-2 all-time against the Ducks.

The Ducks won four of the six singles flights after falling in all three doubles flights. First-year Stephanie Untermeyer took down Justine Stanejko on line one 6-2, 6-1. On line two, senior Juliette Marchisio won a close first set 7-6, followed by a commanding 6-0 win in set two over Onalee Batcheller. Junior Polina Odintseva claimed victory on line three, taking down Loretta Donovan 6-3, 6-3. Flores rounded out the singles victories with the win on line six.

Up Next: Women's Tennis resumes non-conference play on April 22, traveling to Galloway, New Jersey to take on Stockton.
