EDGEWATER, N.J. (April 29, 2023) – The #1 seeded Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team defeated #2 Misericordia in the MAC Freedom Championship by a score of 5-1 at the Edgewater Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

Graduate student Agatha Malinowski was named the tournament MVP as the Ducks won their second straight MAC Freedom championship. Stevens won all three doubles matches which gave them the momentum to go on and win the championship. Despite the scoreline, those in attendance could feel that it was much closer than the box score suggests. With the Ducks up 4-1, Misericordia led in the remaining four singles matches, but the Ducks ended up pulling out the victory.

Malinowski and first-year Stephanie Untermeyer took the first match of the day by a score of 8-5 over Emily Brecker and Brianna Pizzano on line one. The two trailed 5-3 but rattled off eight straight games to take the set, Sophomore Emma Eguia and first-year Anya Sharma also picked up a big victory on line two, winning 8-3 over Erin Cridge and Lydia Barbour. Junior Polina Odintseva paired with sophomore Isabella Dona completed the doubles sweep with a quick 8-1 win over Cassie Benderavich and Hailey Loughlin.

At singles, Eguia picked up a quick 6-0, 6-1 victory on line four over Loughlin. Misericordia then picked up a win on line five to get their first point of the day. Odintseva led 1-0 after the first set along with senior Juliette Marchisio won a tiebreaker in her match 7-6 (9-7) to take the lead in her match. Untermeyer and Malinowski each went down 1-0. In the second set, Untermeyer and Malinowski each tied their respective matches while Odintseva went down 6-1. On line six, Marchisio won 6-4 in the second set over Lauren Visalli to clinch the title for the Ducks.
