No. 39 Men’s Tennis Opens MAC Freedom Play with Wins over Wilkes and King’s

Ducks have won 19 straight conference matches

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (April 2, 2023) – No. 39 Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis dropped just 15 games across two matches in sweeping both Wilkes University and King's College Sunday in a pair of MAC Freedom matches.

Juniors Aashi Kulakarni and Andrew He joined first-year Max-William Kanz and sophomores Matt Luzzi and Olof Persson in winning a pair of singles matches for the Ducks, who improved to 5-6 on the year and to 2-0 in the MAC Freedom. The victories extended the Ducks' conference winning streak to 19.

Wilkes dropped to 0-4 on the year and to 0-1 in league play and have lost four straight, while King's fell to 4-6 on the year and to 0-2 in the MAC Freedom.

The Ducks began the day by winning all three doubles flights in convincing fashion against Wilkes. Kulakarni teamed with Persson to score an 8-1 win over Jonah Nguyen and Connor Frey at first doubles. Sophomore Vivek Harinarayan and Kanz extended the lead with another 8-1 triumph over Donovan Zong and Nathaniel Rathe on line two. He and sophomore Troy Zhang wrapped up the sweep with an 8-0 shutout of Drew Fiedler and Ian Williams on line three.

The Ducks continued their strong play in singles, winning all six flights in straight sets. Four of the wins were shutouts, with Harinarayan, He, Kanz and Persson all winning by 6-0, 6-0 decisions on lines two, three, four and six, respectively. Luzzi topped Fielder 6-0, 6-1 on line five and Kulakarni bested Rathe 6-1, 6-1 at first singles to round out the victory.

The Ducks' attention then turned to King's and the matches provided a similar result.

It was again Kulakarni and Persson getting the Ducks off to a good start at first doubles, topping the Monarchs' top duo of Gregory Logan and John Toussaint via an 8-2 decision. Kanz and Harinarayan again matched the result, posting an 8-2 win over Nick Harth and Brendan Turowski on line two. He and Zhang completed the Ducks' perfect doubles play with an 8-0 blanking of Jacob Nelson and Aidan Temple on line three.

For the second straight match, the Ducks won all six singles flights in straight sets. Kulakarni and He posted 6-1, 6-1 victories on lines one and two, respectively, while Luzzi and Zhang posted 6-0, 6-0 wins on lines four and six. Kanz defeated Patrick Pech 6-0, 6-1 on line three, while Persson topped Turowski 6-1, 6-0 at fifth singles to complete the victory.
