Women’s Tennis Defeats Misericordia 7-2 for Fifth Straight Win

Ducks have won 10 straight regular-season MAC Freedom matches

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 7, 2023) – Sophomore Isabella Dona notched a pair of victories as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team defeated Misericordia University 7-2 Friday in a MAC Freedom matchup on the Stevens Tennis Courts.

For the second straight match, junior Polina Odintseva rallied for a three-set singles win for the Ducks, who won their fifth straight match to improve to 5-5 and to a perfect 4-0 in the MAC Freedom. The convincing victory was the Ducks' 10th straight in regular-season conference play.

Two-time defending MAC Freedom Player of the Year Brianna Pizzano won twice to lead Misericordia, who fell to 7-6 on the year and to 1-1 in conference action. The Ducks' victory snapped the Cougars' two-match winning streak.

As they've done throughout their current winning streak, the Ducks got off to a fast start by winning two of the three doubles flights. Dona partnered with senior Juliette Marchisio to score their third straight win with an 8-3 victory over Cassie Benderavich and Lauren Visalli on line three, while the first-year team of Stephanie Untermeyer and Anya Sharma posted their fifth straight victory with an 8-4 triumph on line two over Lydia Barbour and Erin Cridge. Pizzano teamed with Emily Breck for an 8-2 win at first doubles as the Ducks took a 2-1 advantage into singles play.

When play shifted to singles competition, Pizzano collected the lone singles win, topping Untermeyer on line one via a competitive 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 match. Meanwhile, the Ducks won the remaining five singles flights to produce the final margin of victory. Four of the five wins came in straight sets as Malinowski produced a tidy 6-2, 6-0 win on line two, sophomore Emma Equia topped Cridge on line four 6-0, 6-1, with Dona and first-year Fionna Flores earning wins on lines five and six, respectively.

After dropping the first set 6-3, Odintseva rallied to win the final two sets, 6-2 and 6-4 to defeat Barbour to post her second victory of the season.

Up Next: Women's Tennis continues MAC Freedom play on April 12 with an in-state matchup with FDU-Florham. The Ducks have won seven of the eight all-time meetings with the Devils, with four coming via shutout.
