GLASSBORO, N.J. (September 13, 2023) - Junior Emily Smart scored her second goal of the season while first-year Sophia Cozza scored her first career goal, but the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team lost to No. 8 Rowan 4-2 on Wednesday night at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium.
The Ducks (3-1) dropped their first game of the season after starting the year 3-0, which was the best start they had had since 2009. The loss marks ten straight in the matchup between the Ducks and Rowan, who improved to 3-2. Stevens conceded four goals on the evening, which more than doubled the amount they had conceded on the year. The Ducks have conceded at least four goals in each of the last three matchups with the Profs. The two goals scored for Stevens against Rowan ties the most the Ducks have ever scored against them, which also came back in 2009.
Rowan came out firing in the first quarter as they scored just four minutes into the game. They would double their lead four minutes later. The Profs would close out the quarter with their third goal of the game coming in the 14th minute. This was the largest deficit the Ducks had faced so far this season. A scoreless second quarter would keep the game at 3-0 in favor of Rowan at the break.
The Profs again came out the aggressors in the second half as they continued to rack up shots and penalty corners. The score would remain 3-0 after three quarters. In the start of the fourth quarter, Stevens jumped on the board quickly scoring less than a minute in. Sophomore Gabi Maroney fired a shot that was stopped, but Smart was there to tap in the rebound to get the Ducks on the score sheet. Five minutes later, Stevens scored again as Cozza scored off a penalty corner on an assist from junior Sarah Korczukowski. The comeback effort would fall just short as Rowan tallied a fourth goal with little time remaining.
