HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 16, 2023) - Senior Dani Hessels recorded a game-high five shots goal, but the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team lost to Swarthmore 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
The Ducks (3-2) dropped their second straight game after starting the year 3-0, which was the best start they had had since 2009. The loss marks two straight in the all-time matchup between the Ducks and Swarthmore, who improved to 3-2. This is the first time all season that Stevens failed to score in a game. Stevens also has not scored against the Garnet in their last two matchups, being outscored 4-0.
It was a quick start for the Garnet as they scored just two minutes in. Deborah Kim had a back handed shot in front off of a pass from Katherine Kohn. Swarthmore continued to add pressure throughout the first quarter, as they had two shots and two penalty corners. The tides turned in the second quarter as Stevens started to dominate the quarter. Stevens had five shots and four penalty corners, but they were unable to convert a chance as the score remained 1-0 at the half.
Coming out of the half, the teams played more evenly as they traded shots early. Sophomore Lily Wierzbicki made two saves in the third to keep the score at 1-0 heading into the fourth. In the fourth, Stevens had three early shots but none of them hit the target. The Ducks would be unable to tack on the tying goal as they fell for the second straight game.Â
