No. 3 Men's Soccer Opens with 0-0 Stalemate Against Manhattanville

It is the second straight year the Ducks opened with the Valiants and drew.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 1, 2023) - Graduate student Justin Cross made two saves as the No. 3 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team drew with Manhattanville College 0-0 on Friday evening at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

For the second straight campaign, the Ducks (0-0-1) met the Valiants (0-0-1) in the season opener and both times the matches ended in a draw. Last year's contest contained goals however, as the score finished 1-1. The best chance of the game came from junior Luca Campbell, who was awarded a penalty in the 48th minute. His shot went low just to the goalie's left, but the goalie was able to make the save to keep things knotted at zero.

Both teams took their time finding their legs in the first of what will be a long campaign. The two sides felt comfortable playing out of the back and were willing to let the other make a mistake, rather than pressing too hard. Stevens generated three shots in the opening 20 minutes but neither of them found the target. The first time any goalie was called into serious action was Cross in the 26th minute, stopping an opportunity from Manhattanville's Cham. The score would remain tied at zero at the break.

Stevens came out the aggressor in the second half as the Ducks hit the post via senior Adam Cohen just two minutes in, and then were awarded a penalty just a minute later. This did not excite the Valiants, who had two separate claims for a penalty in the first half but were awarded none. Campbell would take the penalty for Stevens after sophomore Ethan Hagan was brought down in the box, but his attempt would be stopped. After that, neither team really threatened as the two teams saw out the nil-nil draw.
