Men's Basketball Continues Home Success With 69-63 Victory over Delaware Valley

Braunstein nailed six triples while Spellman recorded another double-double.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 24, 2024) - Graduate student Stephen Braunstein scored a game-high 25 points with six threes while junior Jack Spellman had 19 points and 12 rebounds as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team defeated Delaware Valley 69-63 in MAC Freedom play Wednesday night inside Canavan Arena. The Athletic Department along with the Student Government Association unveiled a new banner in Canavan Arena that highlights the new student section called "The Pond" before the game.

The Ducks improved to 14-4 and 5-2 in MAC Freedom play. The home success continues for Stevens, as they are now 10-1 inside Canavan Arena and have won six-straight on their home floor. The Ducks improved to 5-1 all-time over the Aggies, who fell to 7-11 and 1-5 in MAC Freedom play. Stevens remains in third place in the conference standings while Delaware Valley is in seventh. The top four teams qualify for the MAC Freedom tournament.

The game started with a triple for Braunstein, who has been one of the best shooters for the Ducks all season. Two minutes later, Braunstein made another one from deep that gave the Ducks a 7-2 lead. At the 15:28 mark, Braunstein made it three triples and then four at the 14:12 mark to cap off a 17-2 run to open the game for Stevens. That woke up the Aggies, who then started matching Duck baskets, but were unable to make a big dent in the deficit. First-year Kyle Maddison made a layup with just over half the first remaining to put the Ducks up 21-7. Sophomore Matt Leming got into the action with under four to go as he made a three to restore the Duck lead to 11. The 11 point advantage would hold as the Ducks led 34-23 at the break.

Stevens went on an 8-0 run to start the second half as they extended their lead to 19. Despite the deficit, Delaware Valley made it a game in the second half. They went down by as many as 20 but were able to rally and get within five late in the half. The Ducks led by 16 with nine minutes to go as Spellman was able to make a shot inside for the Ducks. The Aggies kept clawing away as they made six threes in the final nine minutes, but Stevens held strong and kept Delaware Valley from ever making it a one possession game. The Ducks made six clutch free throws down the stretch that ultimately proved to be the difference as they won 69-63.
