ANNVILLE, Pa. (January 27, 2024) - Sophomore Dorothy Loffredo scored 14 points and recorded 12 rebounds, playing all 40 minutes, as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team picked up a big win against Lebanon Valley 55-51 in MAC Freedom play Saturday afternoon.
The Ducks (9-10, 4-4 MAC Freedom) have not won or lost consecutive games in 2024. With the victory, the Ducks are 6-4 on the road this season, just two road wins short of last year's total. It is the first ever victory for Stevens over Lebanon Valley, as this was just the second meeting between the two teams. The Dutchmen fell to 11-8 and 5-3 in MAC Freedom play. Stevens remains in fifth while Lebanon Valley remains in third. The top four teams qualify for the MAC Freedom Tournament.
Loffredo scored the first six points of the game for the Ducks as they jumped out to an early 6-2 lead. The Dutchmen then proceeded to go on a 10-0 run to take a six-point lead. The other two baskets of the quarter for Stevens came from first-year Kay Decker, as the Ducks trailed 14-10 after one. Down 18-12 in the second, first-year Paige Gorczyca hit a huge triple to cut the deficit in half for the Ducks. The two teams would then trade a free throw, but then neither team could score for the next four-plus minutes. Lebanon Valley took a 21-16 lead, but sophomore Isabella Duval scored the final five points of the half as the score was knotted at 21 at the break.
Duval continued to cook as she scored the first basket out of the break for Stevens. The Dutchmen then went on a 9-0 run to take a 32-23 lead, as the Ducks came out slow again. They would get within four after a converted and-one by Loffredo with 2:29 on the clock. Sophomore Audrey Kehoe would also get in on the action, as she made a basket towards the end of the frame. However, Lebanon Valley led 41-32 after three. The Ducks found themselves down 15 with 6:30 to go, but Stevens turned up from there. Stevens closed the game on a 21-2 run that sealed the victory for the Ducks. Gorczyca and Loffredo kicked off the run with jumpers, and then Decker got the Dutchmen lead down to single digits with 3:30 to go. Gorczyca and Decker followed that with buckets to get within five. With 1:37 left, junior Lucy Alberici made a big triple to get within one. Decker made the lead-taking jumper with under a minute to go, and the Ducks continued to get stops and make free throws as they sealed the victory.
