DALLAS, Pa. (January 8, 2024) - Junior Jack Spellman scored 13 points and had seven rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team lost to Misericordia 83-64 in MAC Freedom play Monday afternoon. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved due to Winter Storm Ember.
The Ducks' lose their streak of three-straight wins as they fall to 10-3 and 1-1 in MAC Freedom play. While Stevens is 7-1 in Hoboken this season, the Ducks fall to 3-2 on the road. Stevens is now 6-3 against the Cougars, who improve to 2-10 and 0-1 in MAC Freedom play with the loss. Stevens has also lost the last two matchups in Dallas.
After going down 3-0, Stevens quickly answered with three of their own as senior Mike Goodall drilled a three. First-year Xander Singh then made a basket that gave Stevens an early 5-3 lead. The Cougars were able to have success early though as they were able to get out to a 22-15 advantage. The Ducks went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 22, as Goodall made another three while junior Jack Spellman made two layups. Down 28-26, first-year Kyle Maddison made a bucket from outside the arc that put the Ducks back in the lead. Maddison would also make a layup with 40 seconds remaining in the half as Stevens held a slim 35-34 lead over Misericordia at the break.
The Ducks scored the first four points on the second frame as Spellman and graduate student Stephen Braunstein each made buckets to push the Duck lead to five. With 17:13 on the clock, graduate student Conor Coffey made a jumper in the paint to put the Ducks up six, but it was all Cougars from there. Misericordia used a 14-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 51-45 lead. Despite efforts from the Ducks to stay in the game, the Cougars just had too much for the Ducks down the stretch. They outscored Stevens 49-29 in the second half, as Misericordia earned their second conference win of the season while handing Stevens their first MAC Freedom loss of the year.
