Field Hockey Downs DeSales 6-1 in MAC Freedom Opener

Moroney Notches Hat Trick; Cozza Adds Two Goals

Hoboken, N.J. – Gabi Moroney recorded her first career hat trick, leading another offensive onslaught for the No. 24 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team in a 6-1 victory over DeSales University in each team's Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom opener Saturday afternoon from DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Stevens improved to 8-4 with its third straight win; DeSales, who came in winners of three of its last four, dropped to 4-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophia Cozza broke the ice for the Ducks just shy of five minutes in with a high arcing backhand from just inside the circle that found its way through a heap of traffic in front of cage. The Ducks had three penalty corners and four shots on goal over the back half of the opening 15 minutes but could not add to the lead. Junior goalkeeper Lily Wierzbicki turned away DeSales' only on-target attempt of the period.

Moroney notched her first of the day just shy of six minutes into the second quarter, redirecting an initial attempt from Emily Smart, then did the same thing six minutes later, putting Stevens up 3-0 heading to the half. Makenna Quigley kept the shutout intact with a defensive save just shy of the midway point of the period.

The Ducks could not convert of any of their five penalty corners in the first seven minutes of the third quarter, but their relentlessness paid off, repeatedly over the final five minutes. First, Moroney completed her hat trick; next, Taylor Brooks put home a rebound off an initial attempt by Cozza; finally, Cozza added her second of the day off a feed from Lauren Flynn – in all, the Ducks doubled their lead in less than four minutes.

Sierra Margut spoiled the shutout for Wierzbicki with a Bulldogs goal in the final minute.
