Reading, Pa. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 affair to Alvernia Wednesday night in a battle of Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom and Commonwealth teams.
The Ducks fell to 5-3-3 for the year, while Alvernia improved to 7-5-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens showed early and often the full extent of a swarming defensive effort that came in allowing 0.60 goals for match for the year, holding Alvernia without an on-target attempt through the first 75 percent of the match. Alvernia's back line was equally as stout early on; it wasn't until the 37
th minute that either side earned a corner kick and not until the 40
th minute that Alejandro Alvardo finally put a shot on net, pinching in on a Stevens rush, letting one fly from 10 yards out, but Alvernia keeper Evan Solley went airborne to make the save. Alvarado recorded the only other on-target opportunity of the half in the final minute, but was not able to get as much on the attempt, shooting across his body from right to left.
The Ducks nearly broke through less than a minute into the second half after an
Emerico Vespucci backheel flick set up
Luca Campbell for a look from 20 yards out, but an Alvernia defender slowed the shot down just enough for Solley to keep it out of the net.
Alvernia finally broke through in the 68
th minute, then tacked on an insurance goal in the 85
th.
