Annville, Pa. – Luca Campbell scored the lone goal of the match with 93 seconds left to play, giving the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team perhaps its most thrilling win of the year Saturday afternoon, 1-0, over Lebanon Valley, leaving the Ducks five points clear of the conference field with two matches left in the regular season.
Stevens moved to 8-3-3 for the year, with an unblemished 5-0-0 record in MAC Freedom play; Lebanon Valley fell to 9-5-2 overall with a 3-1-1 MAC Freedom mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens attacked the Dutchmen back line early and often, drawing three corner kicks, forcing three saves by goalkeeper Dalton Fitterling, and hitting the post in the first six minutes.
The two best defensive teams in the conference settled in from there, with Lebanon Valley yielding just four additional shots over the final 38+ minutes of the half and the Ducks allowing just two.
The second half began in nearly opposite fashion to the first, with Lebanon Valley generating four shots and a pair of corner kicks in the first six minutes, though none of the attempts were on-target. Once again, both back lines locked in, as neither side mustered a shot for more than a half-hour, Oscar Martinez finally ending that drought in the 83
rd minute.
In the 89
th minute, with the Ducks less than two minutes from their third scoreless draw of the season,
Max Rokhsar took possession of the ball near midfield after a Lebanon Valley misplayed header and delivered a lead pass for Campbell sprinting stride-for-stride with a Lebanon Valley defender to the top of the 18-yard box.
Without breaking stride, Campbell delivered a right-footed strike across his body back toward the lower left corner and just beyond a diving Fitterling, setting off a massive celebration by the left corner flag.
