Moroney Tallies Lone Goal As Field Hockey Tops LVC 1-0

Hoboken, N.J. – Junior Gabi Moroney snapped a scoreless tie in the 40th minute to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Lebanon Valley College on Saturday afternoon.

The Ducks (11-5, 4-1 MAC Freedom) outshot LVC (13-3, 3-2 MAC Freedom) 22-3, including 14-2 in shots on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens fired all eight shots in the first quarter but could not find the back of the cage. Off a penalty corner in the second minute, both Sarah Korczukowski and Jess Kopernick had shots blocked before Kopernick was stopped by goalkeeper Ella Weidenhammer in the third minute. Stevens nearly broke through in the eighth minute as defender Amelia Taube cleared Sophia Cozza's shot off a corner. Late in the period, Moroney was denied twice by Weidenhammer, including the final one with two seconds left.

Goalkeeper Lily Wierzbicki was pressed into action in the 18th minute, robbing Jenna Angstadt off a corner. In the 24th minute, she made her second stop of the day, stopping Claire Weidenhammer. The two sides went into the half tied at zero, as Stevens outshot the Dutchmen 9-2 and held a commanding 8-2 edge in penalty corners.

Stevens continued to apply pressure and was rewarded with the lone goal of the afternoon in the 40th minute. Korczukowski was stopped by Weidenhammer but was able to corral the rebound. She passed to Moroney, who poked a shot through a scrum in front, breaking the scoreless game. Closing out the period, Moroney had two shots, and Korczukowski added one, but Weidenhammer thwarted all three.

Protecting the 1-0 edge, Korczukowski rang a try off the post 1:15 into the fourth quarter. The Ducks hunted for the game's second goal, with Moroney peppering the Dutchmen defense with consecutive attempts in the 52nd minute. The Stevens defensive unit was stellar in the final 15 minutes, holding the Dutchmen shotless as they completed the shutout victory.
