Box Score Dallas, Pa. – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team led by two goals early, had a game-winning goal in overtime waived off, then scored the game-winning goal in the second extra session in a wild 3-2 victory Wednesday night against Misericordia.
With the win, the Ducks improved to 12-5 on the season (4-1 in conference), and more importantly, clinched a home game in the semifinals of the MAC Freedom Tournament; Misericordia fell to 2-4 in the conference and 6-11 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks came out on fire, scoring on their first two shots of the match inside the first 10 minutes. First, it was
Sarah Korczukowski, who showed remarkable control, dribbling through and around several defenders to mere inches in front of cage before knocking it home less than 90 seconds in.
Next, it was
Emily Smart, who tapped home a ball played just in front off a feed from
Gabi Moroney just shy of the 10-minute mark.
Misericordia got a goal back in the second quarter, then leveled the contest midway through the fourth, with the Ducks unable to capitalize on any of their four penalty corners or four shots on goal during that stretch.
Less than a minute into overtime, Stevens scored what appeared to be the winning goal, but it was waived off after referees ruled it had gone in off a player's foot. The Red and Gray took five more shots in the first 10-minute extra session, holding the Cougars to a single opportunity.
In double overtime, from just in front of its own goal, Stevens quickly played the ball across midfield and toward the Misericordia cage. Moroney took full advantage of a mistake by the Cougar defense, firing one shot that was saved, but the rebound deflected right back to her and, seeking her eighth goal over her last seven matches, the junior did not miss, burying the winner.
