Women's Basketball Upends TCNJ

Hoboken, N.J. – Kay Decker and Leyla Castro combined for 44 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team past The College of New Jersey 72-64 on Saturday.

Castro scored 24 points as Decker added 20 for Stevens (2-2), and Brooke McFadden had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions (2-2).

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lions used a 7-0 run to grab a 7-2 edge midway through the opening quarter, holding Stevens scoreless for a three-minute stretch. Castro halted the run with a three-pointer, and a layup from Decker leveled the game at seven with 3:55 left in the first. Isabella Duval hit from deep to kick-start a 6-0 spurt late in the first quarter, punctuated with a layup and a free throw from Castro.

Castro opened the second with a traditional three-point play to extend the Stevens lead to six 32 seconds into the second quarter. The Lions cut the deficit to four with a pair of free throws, but Dorothy Lofredo tallied seven consecutive points, and Castro banged home a three-pointer to polish off a 10-0 run. The two sides traded points over the rest of the way and Stevens entered the half up 10.

The Lions brought the lead down to four with an 8-2 run over the first 6:30 of the third. A Castro triple and Decker jumper stretched the gap back to nine before TCNJ countered with the final three points to enter the fourth quarter down five. The guests opened the fourth with a layup from Nina Branchizio, making it a one-possession contest.

Castro hit a layup and free before Olivia Schbiger's transition layup pushed the Stevens margin back to eight. The Lions cut the margin to six with 4:20 left, but a Decker putback layup and free throw brought the score to 64-55. The Lions held Stevens with a field goal over the final 3:55, but Stevens was able to seal the victory with six free throws in the 38 seconds.
