Hoboken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team knocked off Hunter College 78-64 in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.
Leyla Castro and
Kay Decker posted a double-double for Stevens (3-2) as Alexa Charles had 34 points and nine rebounds for Hunter (3-3).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks raced out to a 5-0 lead before the Ducks cut the deficit to one. Hunter continued to keep the score at a three-point margin before Castro knocked down a three-pointer with 3:34 left in the first before
Dorothy Loffredo hit a layup off a Castro feed.
Isabella Duval converted two free throws with three seconds left in the first quarter, giving Stevens a one-point edge.
A triple from Hunter opened the second quarter, scoring with a three before the Ducks answered with a 10-2 spurt.
Zoe Kashner and Loffredo had four points apiece during the run. After the Hawks tied the contest at 29, Castro and first-year
Katherine Bogutsky combined for seven straight markers to push Stevens up by seven. The Ducks entered halftime with a seven-point advantage.
Stevens opened the second half with a 7-2 run, extending their lead to double digits. Decker, who was held scoreless in the first half, erupted for five points during a three-minute stretch midway through the third to stretch the margin to 14. Castro converted four free throws in the final 1:03 of the third to give Stevens the 17-point lead to begin the fourth stanza.
The Hawks limited Stevens to one field goal over the first 5:04 but were able to convert free throws to keep the scoreline in double figures. Bogutsky hit a layup and a free with 4:56 left to make it 72-56. Free throws from Castro, Bogutsky, and Kashner over the last two minutes established the final score of 78-64.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Castro matched the school record of 12 assists in a game, set four times previously by Dani Dudek. The junior tallied 18 points to go along with the 12 helpers while adding seven boards.
- Loffredo poured in 20 points while snaring eight boards and two blocks.
- Decker, who was plagued by foul trouble in the first half, registered 14 points and 11 boards.
- The Ducks shot 26-of-38 from the charity stripe in the game.
