Men's Basketball Rides 52-Point Second Half to 78-60 Win Over Widener

Ducks shoot 52.8 percent from floor and 58.3 percent from distance in final 20 minutes.

Hoboken, N.J. – Mike Goodall and Kyle Maddison combined for 48 points, 29 in the second half, leading the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team to a 78-60 win over the Widener University Pride Saturday afternoon from Canavan Arena.

Stevens (6-2) won its third straight, shooting 45.5 percent from beyond the arc, Goodall and Maddison combining to go 8-for-15. Jack Spellman finished with 10 points, 13 rebounds, and four blocks for the Ducks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Goodall scored on a layup off the opening tip, giving Stevens a lightning-quick 2-0 lead. After both sides went scoreless for more than two minutes, the sides swapped threes on consecutive possessions. With Stevens up 5-3, Goodall reeled off five straight points in less than 35 seconds via a jumper and three-ball.

After a Widener (2-5) timeout following Goodall's 5-0 run, a Brendan Coughlan jump hook, a four-point play from Maddison, and a Spellman layup pushed the Ducks' lead to 19-7, but the Ducks hot start quickly turned cold.

An 8:27 scoring drought and a 17-0 Widener run gave the Pride a 24-19 lead at the 5:18 mark of the opening half. The Ducks ended the drought and worked their way back to a 24-all tie in the final 90 seconds (holding Widener scoreless for 4:35), eventually taking the lead back at the half, 26-25, on a Logan Scott layup in the final 40 seconds.

Much like in the first half, the Ducks opened the second half firing on all cylinders. After Goodall answered a Widener jump hook with a three, giving Stevens a 29-27 lead, a Maddison layup and two Coughlan free throws put the Ducks up six.

Widener got a point back, working the score to 35-30, but three straight layups from Spellman, Goodall, and Coughlan pushed the Stevens lead back into double-digit territory at the 15:40 mark.

Maddison followed with the Ducks' next eight points as the lead grew to 16, 49-33, at the 12:39 mark. Widener worked the lead back under 10, 61-52, at the 6:06 mark, but would draw no closer.

Four points from Spellman, a Scholl three-pointer, and nine from Goodall gave Stevens a 24-point lead, its largest of the day, before Widener reeled off six straight to end the game after both teams cleared their benches.
