HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 10, 2024) - First-year Tommy Scholl scored 11 points and recorded a career-high seven rebounds as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team defeated King's 68-55 in MAC Freedom play Saturday afternoon inside Canavan Arena.
It was senior day for the Ducks, as the team honored seniors Mike Goodall, Frank Gelfman, and Matthew Coletti.
The Ducks improved to 18-5 and 9-3 in MAC Freedom play with two games remaining. The Ducks have now won six of their last seven, and finish 6-1 at home in MAC Freedom play, as well as 11-2 overall inside Canavan Arena this season. The top four teams qualify for the tournament.
It was neck and neck early on, as the Monarchs held an 8-7 lead after the first four minutes. Up 10-9 with 13:25 to go, Scholl made a tough layup to put the Ducks up three. Two possessions later, first-year Kyle Maddison buried a triple to make the score 15-11 Stevens. At the 9:29 mark, Scholl grabbed an offensive rebound and made a turnaround layup to put the Ducks up six. Gelfman then made a field goal to put Stevens up eight at 23-15 with 8:30 to go. Maddison then made another triple, while first-year Ritchie Machado made a layup to give the home side a 13-point advantage. King's would get back to within seven, but graduate student Stephen Braunstein pushed the advantage back to ten with a triple. Stevens outscored King's 8-3 to close the half, as they led 38-27.Â
Neither team scored till the 17:53 mark until Goodall made a free throw. First-year Xander Singh made the first field goal of the half, making a triple at the 16:19 mark to put the Ducks up 42-29. King's then went on a 9-0 run to get within four. Trying to get momentum back, Singh converted an and-one to put Stevens up seven. The Monarchs then made back-to-back threes to get back to within one. Junior Matt Leming buried a fast-break triple a few possessions later to make the score 50-44 in favor of the Ducks. Junior Jack Spellman then added a layup with 10:34 to go, forcing a Monarch timeout. Spellman hammered home a dunk and took the contact as the Ducks took a 12-point lead with under nine minutes remaining. King's got back to within nine with about five and a half minutes to go, but Gelfman restored the double-digit advantage with a layup. Gelfman would later make a sweet pull-up jumper that put Stevens ahead 67-52. The deficit would be too much for the Monarchs, as the Ducks earned the senior day victory.
