DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (February 14, 2024) - Graduate student Stephen Braunstein scored 27 points while junior Jack Spellman recorded another double-double as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team defeated Delaware Valley 71-65 in MAC Freedom play Wednesday night.
The Ducks improved to 19-5 and 10-3 in MAC Freedom play. The Ducks have now won seven of their last eight games. The Ducks improved to 6-1 all-time against the Aggies, including sweeping the season series. The Aggies fall to 8-16 and 2-11 in the MAC Freedom. Stevens has now clinched the #2 seed in the MAC Freedom playoffs. DeSales has clinched the #1 seed, while Arcadia is #3 and Misericordia will be #4. Stevens will host Arcadia next Wednesday in the MAC Freedom semifinals.
Graduate student Stephen Braunstein scored the first basket of the game as the Ducks took the early lead. The two teams remained neck and neck, as neither could gain much separation in the half. Tied at 10, the Aggies went on a 6-0 run to take a six-point advantage. First-year Kyle Maddison then made a triple to cut the deficit in half. Junior Jack Spellman then made a layup to get within one. With the Aggies up five, senior Mike Goodall buried a shot from long range to bring the Ducks within two. Spellman made a dunk at the 2:08 mark that tied the game at 27. Maddison would add another triple as time expired in the first half, as the Ducks led 32-30 at the half.
After Delaware Valley regained the lead to start the half, first-year Xander Singh made a basket that gave the Ducks a 34-33 advantage. That would kickstart a 10-0 run for the Ducks, highlighted by six points from Braunstein. Stevens was able to take a double-digit advantage after back-to-back threes from Braunstein and Maddison. With 10:10 to go, Stevens took their largest lead of the game after a layup by first-year Richard Machado. Trailing by 13, the Aggies went on a 11-0 run to get back to within two. With 3:32 left in the game, Braunstein put down a dunk that gave the Ducks a five-point advantage. Stevens would close out the game with free throws, as they survived the test from Delaware Valley.
