No. 10/9 Wrestling Earns Their Second-Straight Victory After Taking Down No. 15/15 NYU Saturday

Three Ducks recorded pins in the contest, three of which came against ranked wrestlers.

NEW YORK, N.Y. (February 10, 2024) – Three Ducks recorded pins as the No. 10/9 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team defeated No. 15/15 New York University (NYU) 34-13 Saturday afternoon. 

Seven wrestlers picked up victories on the evening as Stevens improves to 12-4 in duals this season. The Ducks trailed 13-11 at one point, but responded quickly and never trailed again. NYU drops to 10-3 with the loss.

Seniors #13/8 Stefan Major and #10/13 Joel Matsinovsky, along with junior Max Ruiz, earned the pin victories. The quickest pin came from Ruiz, who took down Luke DuPont in 1:54. It was also Ruiz's quickest pin of the year.

This was the 17th meeting between the two programs. The Ducks are now 10-6-1 all-time against the Violets. Stevens has also now won three of the last four duals against NYU.

The Rundown

  • Vega earned a ranked victory for the second-straight day at 125, as he beat #NR/10 Benny Bautista with a major. With a 4-0 deficit NYU earned their first victory of the day, as Taisei Kurachi beat senior #11/10 Luke Hoerle at 133, earning a 15-8 decision win.
  • The Ducks responded with back-to-back wins at 141 and 149. Sophomore #15/11 Nico Diaz earned the Ducks' first major of the day by taking down Nicholas Kruczynski 12-1. Graduate student Pasquale Vizzoni then a ranked opponent in #14/13 Vincenzo Napolitana via a slim 4-2 decision to put the Ducks up 13-3.
  • Sophomore #4/6 Ryan Smith then lost his first dual of the season at 157, as he was blanked by #2/3 Cooper Pontelandolfo 12-0. NYU then earned six points to tie the dual at 13, as Hassan Khan earned a fall over junior Harrison Hinojosa in 1:58.
  • From there, it was all Ducks, as Major at 174 avenged the Hinojosa fall with a fall of his own, defeating #5/5 Jason Geyer in 2:52. Martsinovsky then earned another fall for the Ducks at 184, also beating a ranked opponent. He pinned #13/10 Trent Furman at 4:54. This gave Stevens a 25-13 lead.
  • Junior Blaise Wagner dominating his matchup at 197. He earned 22 points and got the tech fall victory over Nick Bell 22-5 to seal the match. With the dual already settled, Ruiz then pinned Luke DuPont.
  • Stevens was deducted two points in the match.

Top Performers

  • Major earned his team-leading 11th pin of the season. Martsinovksy earned his fifth, and Ruiz earned his fourth.
  • The three pins are the most for the Ducks in a dual this season.
  • This marks back-to-back ranked dual wins for the Ducks after falling to Roanoke last weekend.

For the Opponents

  • Khan earned almost half of NYU's team points in the dual.
