WAYNE, N.J. (February 22, 2024) – Sophomore Erik Sibbach picked up his second win of the season, striking out a career-high ten and allowing no runs in five innings of work, as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team beat William Paterson 3-1 Thursday afternoon. The game was rescheduled from February 22.
Sibbach (2-0) has been almost flawless to open up the season. He has struck out 18 total batters this season while allowing zero runs when he is on the mound. The righty has just walked one batter in the 36 he has faced.
The Ducks open up the season 3-0 for the second straight year. The Ducks also defeated William Paterson in the third game of the season last year. The Ducks also start 1-0 on the road.
With the win, Stevens improves to 5-16-1 against the Pioneers, ending a two-game losing streak against them. William Paterson dropped their first game of the season, falling to 1-1.
The Rundown
- The two sides went scoreless in the first two innings of the game. Stevens would then get on the board in the third to make it 1-0. First-year Chip Krese kicked off the inning reaching on a muffed throw. Sophomore Dylan Fishbough then executed a sacrifice bunt, which moved Krese to second. Graduate student Ben Tobio followed and grounded out to the pitcher, which would then move Krese to third, and then Krese would score on a single from junior Eli Somers.
- Krese provided the spark again in the seventh inning for the Ducks. With one out, he singled and then reached second in the next at bat as Fishbough laid down another sacrifice bunt. This time Tobio singled up the middle, allowing Krese to score for the second time.
- With two outs in the eighth, graduate student Michael Reyes doubled to left center to immediately give the Ducks a runner in scoring position. He would advance to third on a wild pitch. Senior Frank Tonina hit an RBI single through the left side in the following plate appearance to triple the Duck lead.
- The Pioneers attempted to make a comeback in the ninth as they scored one unearned run. Senior Axel Johnson came in relief and shut the door on the Pioneers, as the home side left the bases loaded to end the game.

- Krese scored two runs while Reyes added another.
- Reyes and Tonina each had two hits.
- Junior Joe Gonzalez struck out four in two innings of work.
- Reyes' double in the eighth was the only extra base hit in the game.
- The Ducks didn't allow a hit after the third inning.

- Ian Metzger took the loss, as he allowed four hits and one run in six innings of work.
- Giovanni Aresta scored the lone run for William Paterson.
