No. 2 Men's Volleyball Defeats No. 4 Springfield Saturday

Sherman recorded a season-high 24 kills.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 24, 2024) – Junior Koby Sherman recorded a season-high 24 kills as the No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball beat No. 4 Springfield 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-23) Saturday night.

Graduate student Louden Moran filled the stat sheet, as he totaled 43 assists while adding five kills, six digs, three aces, and two blocks.

Stevens hit .346 for the match, including .556 in the second set. The Pride hit .295 in the match.

Stevens sees their winning streak rise to 15-straight games with the victory. The Ducks are now 3-8 all-time against Springfield, including winning the last two. Stevens improves to 6-0 in true road games this season. The Pride fall to 13-2 with the loss.

The Rundown

  • Stevens scored the first three points of the match as Moran tallied a kill and graduate student Connor Feulner recorded an ace. The Ducks went up 7-2 after back-to-back kills from sophomore Tyler Hoke and graduate student Percy Bickford. Springfield would then go on a run, scoring seven of the next eight, to take a 12-11 lead. Sherman then hit for a kill while Moran backed it up with an ace to put Stevens back in front. The Pride then answered with five of the next six to go up 17-14. Down 18-16, Sherman recorded a kill and then had an ace to tie the frame. Springfield edged out the Ducks down the stretch to take the first set.
  • After being tied at three, Sherman added two kills and Bickford another as the Ducks went up 6-3. Still leading 6-4, Stevens rattled off five in a row to go up seven. Sherman tallied two kills out of the five points. The visitors then went up 16-7 thanks to a kill from graduate student Nathan Lancia. Feulner earned the last three points scored by the Ducks in the set, as Stevens tied things up with a 25-16 set victory.
  • Springfield took a 4-3 lead to open the set, but Sherman scored the next two points for Stevens to put them back in the lead. Tied at five, Bickford and Sherman combined for the next three kills to go up three. Later up 12-10, Hoke tallied an ace for the Ducks, while Moran backed it up with another ace. Stevens led 20-15 and rattled off the next three points to take a commanding eight point lead. The Pride wouldn't go away, scoring the next five, but Stevens held on and secured the third set 25-23.
  • Sherman recorded four early kills in set four as Stevens went up 6-3. Sherman and Moran later recorded back-to-back kills that saw the Ducks go up four. The Pride would score the next point, but Stevens responded with the next four to lead 15-8. First-year Alex Olcott scored the next point for the Ducks. Leading 23-19, the Ducks led Springfield scored the next three to get within one. Lancia ended the match for Stevens as he recorded a kill to give the Ducks the 25-23 set victory.

  • Sherman finished the match with a hitting percentage of .447 on 38 attacks. He also had four digs and a block.
  • Feulner and Moran recorded a team-high three blocks.
  • Bickford added 14 kills.
  • Junior Jesse Knuckles had a team-high eight digs and added six assists.
  • The Ducks tallied seven aces.
