No. 2 Men's Volleyball Picks Up a Pair of Ranked Victories on Saturday

The Ducks also improved to 1-0 in MAC play.

DALLAS, Pa. (March 2, 2024) – Junior Koby Sherman dropped 19 kills, while graduate student Connor Feulner added 14, as the No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball beat both No. 19 Misericordia 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-12) and No. 15 Marymount 3-2 (25-18, 23-25, 19-25, 25-14, 15-5) Saturday in a tri-match hosted by Misericordia.

Graduate student Louden Moran recorded 44 assists on the day, while junior Sebastian Huyke added 30. Junior Jesse Knuckles and senior Phu-Quy Ho each had nine digs for the Ducks.

Despite the sweep, Stevens allowed Misericordia to hit .229 in the game. In the five set victory, the Ducks let Marymount hit .150. Stevens hit .431 against Misericordia and .305 against Marymount.

Stevens sees their winning streak rise to 17-straight games with the victories this afternoon. The Ducks also start 1-0 in MAC play with the win over Misericordia (1-1). Stevens improves to 7-1 all-time against Misericordia. The Ducks are now a perfect 8-0 all-time against Marymount.

The Rundown (Misericordia)

  • Tied at three early, sophomore Tyler Hoke recorded back-to-back kills to put the Ducks up two. Misericordia would hang tight with the Ducks, answering every time and taking a 13-12 lead. Stevens scored four of the next five, with Bickford having two kills and an ace, to help give the Ducks the lead back. Later with Stevens leading 21-20, Misericordia scored four of six as they had set point in their favor. Stevens ended up scoring the final three points of the set, including a kill from graduate student Nathan Lania, to give the Ducks the set win.
  • The Cougars jumped out to a 6-3 lead in set two. Still trailing 11-9, the Ducks rattled off four-straight, with Bickford scoring two of those points off of kills, to put the Ducks back in front. Still ahead 15-13, Stevens pulled out six of eight points to take a commanding 21-15 lead. The difference would remain at the end, as the Ducks won 25-19.
  • Aiming for the sweep, Stevens scored 16 of the first 18 as they basically drained the Cougars' energy. Moran served for the majority of the set, tallying three aces. Sherman recorded four kills and an ace in the set as well, as the Ducks blew out the Cougars 25-12 for the sweep.
The Rundown (Marymount)
  • Things wouldn't be as easy for Stevens in the second match of the day. The Ducks took a 5-2 lead early but Marymount would stay close as the match would read 11-9. The Ducks would be able to win the first set 25-18, but things would get tougher from there.
  • The Saints went up 7-2 to kick off the second set. The Ducks responded with three-straight points, including a kill by junior Brandon Rogers. Marymount led 14-9 before Stevens rattled off three-straight to get back to within two. Down 21-18, first-year Alex Olcott and graduate student Christopher Varseveld to get back to within one. The Saints would edge out the Ducks in the second, winning 25-23.
  • Stevens would face a two-set deficit after dropping the third. Losing 7-6, Marymount took four in a row to go up five. Sherman tallied the next two points for the Ducks off of kills, but they still found themselves trailing by four. After a kill from Feulner, the Saints scored five in a row to go up eight. They would win 25-19.
  • Trying to force a fifth set, Stevens jumped out to a 6-1 lead. Feulner, Sherman, and Hoke each had kills, while Moran recorded an ace. Leading 10-6, the Ducks picked up four in a row to double their lead. Up 16-9, Stevens went on a 6-1 run, which allowed them to take the fourth set.
  • With the match in the fifth set, Stevens led 6-2 after the first eight points. Lancia tallied two kills while Moran recorded one. Leading 8-4, Stevens scored five points in a row to basically ice the match, as they defeated the Saints in five sets.

  • Bickford finished the Misericordia match with a hitting percentage of .467 on 15 attacks. He also had four digs and an ace in that match.
  • Feulner had 10 kills against Marymount.
  • Olcott had nine kills against Marymount.
  • Hoke recorded five blocks against Marymount.
  • Lancia and Hoke tallied six kills versus Misericordia.
  • 16 Ducks appeared in the Marymount match.

  • Jared Piontkowski had 13 kills and two digs for Misericordia.
  • Five Saints eclipsed six kills in the match.
