No. 2 Men's Volleyball Wins 3-0 Over Widener on Saturday

Stevens has not dropped a MAC contest since 2021.

CHESTER, Pa. (March 16, 2024) – Senior Carver Weirick recorded 10 kills while first-year Joshua Levandoske had nine as the No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball beat Widener 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-19) Saturday afternoon.

First-year Nick Schmidt was the distributor for the Ducks today, as he put up 26 assists. He also added eight digs and a block. Weirick recorded five digs.

Stevens hit .293 for the match, including .346 in the second set. The Pride hit .140 in the match.

Stevens (24-1, 4-0 MAC) sees their winning streak rise to 21-straight games with the victory. They haven't lost a conference match since 2021. The Ducks are now 5-0 all-time against Widener. Stevens improves to 9-0 in true road games this season. Widener falls to 8-9 (1-3 MAC) with the loss.

The Rundown

  • Widener got out to an early 7-5 lead in the first set. Stevens would then score the next three, with Weirick recorded back-to-back aces in the mini streak. Later tied at nine, Stevens again scored three in a row, as first-year Esteban Schmitt earned a kill. With the Ducks up 22-17, Levandoske recorded a kill that pushed the Ducks to three-straight  points as they secured the first set.
  • Once again, it was the home side that started off better, as the Pride got out to 4-1 and 7-4 leads in the second. Levandoske would later record two kills for two Stevens points, but the Ducks still trailed 11-8. Trailing by four, Schmitt and junior Brandon Rogers tacked on back-to-back kills to get the Ducks within two. Still down 17-14, Levandoske and Widener went back and forth, trading two points each. The most pivotal run of the frame came with Widener up 19-16, as Stevens rattled off four-straight points to take their first lead of the set at 20-19. Now tied at 22, Stevens scored the final three, with Weirick and graduate student Christopher Varseveld each tallying kills, as the Ducks went up 2-0.
  • Despite Widener starting the third with a 4-1 lead, the Ducks picked up four straight to take the lead, Levandoske and Weirick earned kills. Down 7-6, Weirick and Varseveld once again went to work, securing back-to-back kills for Stevens. With the match tied at 12, Stevens scored the next four, with Levandoske, Rogers, and Weirick each producing kills, to give the Ducks a 16-12 advantage. Widener would not be able to get back in the set, as the Ducks held on for another sweep.

  • Weirick finished the match with a hitting percentage of .429 on 21 attacks. He also had two blocks and three aces.
