WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (March 22, 2024) – First-year Garret Wolf had three hits and two RBI in game one, while junior Eli Somers drove home the winning run in game two, as Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team defeated King's 7-3 after eight innings in game one, and 3-2 after seven innings in game two Friday in a MAC Freedom doubleheader.
Sophomore Eric Sibbach (5-1) picked up the victory in game one. He pitched seven innings and gave up just three runs on five hits while striking out six. Senior Axel Johnson pitched the eighth and got through three batters in order.
Junior Will Staviski (1-0) earned the win in game two. He pitched one and two-thirds innings and gave up just one hit. Wolf earned the start in game two and allowed four runs on two hits in four and a third innings pitched. Senior Jacob Buurman (1) picked up his 11th career save.
The Ducks (12-5, 4-2 MAC Freedom) have now won six games in a row and have won three-straight conference games. Stevens is also now a perfect 6-0 in true road games. The Ducks now sit third in the MAC Freedom standings.
With the win, Stevens improves to 12-0 all-time against the Monarchs. King's drops to 5-11 and 1-5 in conference play.
The Rundown (Game 1)
- With one out in the second, graduate student Michael Reyes was hit by a pitch. He would later reach second on a passed ball. After senior Frank Tonina flew out to center and advanced Reyes to third on the play, first-year Garret Wolf doubled to bring home Reyes and put the Ducks up 1-0.
- First-year Chip Krese singled to start the third inning for Stevens. Graduate student Ben Tobio then laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing Krese to second. Krese would score two batters later as junior Zachary Boyken recorded an RBI single.
- King's got one run back in the bottom of the third to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Ducks.
- Stevens added one more run in the seventh. Tobio singled to kick start things, and then junior Eli Somers followed that up with a single of his own to put runners on first and second. First-year Quinton Sterling would pinch run for Somers. After Boykin hit a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners, Kreiser was intentionally walked to load the bases. Reyes then reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Tobio on the play, as the Ducks went up 3-1.
- King's scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
- Stevens more than doubled their advantage in the eighth. After Tonina reached on an error, Wolf hit another double, this time scoring Tonina, as the Ducks retook the lead. After an out, Krese reached on an error and advanced to second on the play, allowing Wolf to score. Tobio would walk and then himself and Krese would both advance a base on a wild pitch to put runners on second and third for Stevens. Pinch hitting, senior Jack Irby reached on a fielder's choice, which advanced Tobio to third and scored Krese. The Ducks' last run of the inning came off a wild pitch, as Tobio came in to score.
The Rundown (Game 2)
- The Ducks struck in the top of the first in game one. With Boykin on first and two outs in the inning, Kreiser doubled to bring home Boykin to put the Ducks up 1-0.
- Boykin and Kreiser were involved again in the third. With two outs, Boykin and Kreiser were hit by a pitch in back-to-back at-bats. Reyes then singled to score Boykin as Stevens led 2-0.
- The Monarchs tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at two.
- With the game still tied and one out in the seventh, Krese hit a huge double to left to put a runner in scoring position. Tobio would line out in the next at-bat, but Somers followed that with the winning RBI single to help the Ducks sweep King's on Friday.
