Baseball Loses Road Game at Penn State Harrisburg

The loss ends a six-game winning streak for Stevens.

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (March 24, 2024) – Junior Eli Somers had three hits and an RBI as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to Penn State Harrisburg 5-3 in a non-conference contest Sunday afternoon.

Graduate student Leo Bristow (0-2) took the loss for Stevens. He lasted three and two-thirds innings and gave up five hits and four runs. Juniors Joe Gonzalez and Matt Villapiano combined to pitch three and a third and allowed no runs.

The Ducks (12-6) see their winning streak end at six games. Stevens has had two separate six-game winning streaks on the year. It became the first road loss of the year for the Ducks.

With the loss, Stevens loses the first game of the all-time series against the Lions. The two teams will square off later on this year in Hoboken. Penn State Harrisburg improves to 13-5.

The Rundown

  • Penn State Harrisburg scored three in the bottom of the first to go up 3-0.
  • Stevens stranded the bases loaded with one out in the third.
  • The Lions added another run in the third via a solo home run.
  • The Ducks finally got on the board in the fifth inning. First-year Chip Krese reached base on a fielder's choice. He then stole second and third. The first-year then scored on a wild pitch.
  • Penn State Harrisburg quickly got the run back in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.
  • Stevens was able to cut the deficit in the seventh. Krese and graduate student Ben Tobio each walked to start the inning. Junior Eli Somers then hit an RBI-single to score Krese from second. Tobio would later score on an error as the Lions led 5-3.
  • The Ducks would bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but they would not be able to score as Penn State Harrisburg held on for the victory.

  • Krese scored two runs.
  • Tobio scored once.
  • Krese stole two bases while first-year Garret Wolf stole one.
  • Four Ducks had one hit to go along with the three from Somers.

For the Opponents

  • Fisher Druck (3-0) earned the win. He pitched five innings and allowed just one run on five hits. Josh Berzonski (2) earned the save.
  • Carlos Irizarry scored two runs, recorded two hits, and added two RBI.
  • Kevin Lehner batted home two runs, as well as tallying a hit and a run scored.
