Baseball Defeats Delaware Valley 10-6 Friday Afternoon

The Ducks have won five-straight MAC Freedom games.

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (March 29, 2024) – Junior Eli Somers had four hits and scored three runs as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team defeated Delaware Valley 10-6 in a MAC Freedom contest Friday afternoon.

Sophomore Erik Sibbach (6-1) earned the victory for Stevens. He lasted six and two-thirds innings and gave up four hits and three runs while striking out nine. Senior Jacob Buurman (2) picked up the save, striking out both batters he faced in the ninth with the bases loaded.

The Ducks (13-6, 5-2 MAC Freedom) hop back into the win column after losing their last time out. The Ducks have won five-straight contests in MAC Freedom play after dropping their first two. They will be back in action tomorrow with two more against the Aggies.

With the win, Stevens is 9-2 all-time against the Aggies, including winning the last two. Delaware Valley falls to 8-10 and 1-4 in MAC Freedom play.

The Rundown

  • Graduate student Ben Tobio singled to start the game. He later reached second on a passed ball, and then third after junior Zachary Boykin grounded out. He would score after a single from graduate student Michael Reyes to put Stevens up 1-0.
  • The Aggies tied the game by scoring once in the bottom of the first.
  • Delaware Valley scored two more in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead.
  • After a walk from first-year Chip Krese to start the third, Tobio and junior Eli Somers recorded back-to-back singles to load the bases. Now with one out, Reyes was hit by a pitch, which allowed Krese to score and the Ducks to get within one. First-year Garret Wolf hit a bases clearing double in the next at-bat as Stevens jumped back in front. 
  • Stevens added two more in the top of the seventh to go up 7-3. Somers started the inning by doubling to left center. With Somers on third and one out, Reyes was intentionally walked. He would then steal second and reach third on a passed ball, while Somers scored on the play. Senior Frank Tonina would bring Reyes home on an RBI single as the Ducks went up four.
  • To start the eighth, junior Colby Ching was hit by a pitch. Later in the inning with one out and Krese on third, Tobio recorded a single, advancing Krese to third on the play. Somers would single in the next at-bat, scoring Krese and pushing Tobio to second. Reyes would later bring both base runners home with a single as the Ducks went up 10-3.
  • Delaware Valley got two back in the bottom of the eighth.
  • The Aggies scored one more in the bottom of the ninth, but stranded the bases loaded as the Ducks held on for the win.

  • Tobio and Somers each scored three times.
  • Somers led the Ducks in hits with four, while Tobio followed right behind with three.
  • Reyes picked up four RBI with Wolf adding three.
  • Reyes also stole a base.
  • Krese scored two runs and recorded a hit.

For the Opponents

  • Connor Esbenshad (0-2) took the loss. He pitched three and two-thirds innings and allowed five runs on six hits.
  • Evan Scally had three hits.
  • Liam Martin had two RBI. He also scored twice.
