Boykin and Wolf Homer as Baseball Downs NJCU 15-3

The Ducks improved to 11-2 at home this year.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 23, 2024) – Junior Zachary Boykin recorded five RBI, including hitting a three-run homer in the third, while first-year Garret Wolf recorded an inside the park home run, as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team defeated New Jersey City University (NJCU) 15-3 Tuesday night in a non-conference contest.

Junior Sean Shea (1-0) earned his first career win. He pitched two innings of relief and struck out four batters without allowing a hit. Sophomore Jonah Swarts started for the Ducks. He pitched four innings and gave up three runs on eight hits. Seniors Axel Johnson and Mark DeCicco each recorded three strikeouts in just one inning of work

The Ducks (21-12) ended a two-game losing streak with the win. Stevens currently has a non-conference record of 10-5 with just two games remaining. The Ducks also improved to 11-2 at Dobbelaar Field this season.

With the win, Stevens improves to 11-1 all-time against the Gothic Knights. The Ducks have won five of the last six meetings between the teams. NJCU fell to 12-20 with the loss.

The Rundown

  • NJCU hit a two-run homer in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Stevens struck for six in the bottom of the third to climb into the lead. With the bases loaded, graduate student Michael Reyes crushed a ball to right center that hit just under the top of the wall. He would get a single on the play, which would score two. In the next at-bat, Boykin hit his home run that brought everybody home to give the Ducks a three run lead. First-year Chip Krese then walked, followed by a double from junior Liam DeRubertis that scored Krese, as the Ducks went up four.
  • The Gothic Knights made it 6-3 after the top of the fourth.
  • Stevens went to work again in the bottom of the fourth as they scored four times. The Ducks were walked four times in the inning to go along with getting hit by three pitches. DeRubertis, Krese, junior Kevin Villares and Boykin each picked up an RBI.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, graduate student Ben Tobio grounded into a fielder's choice, bringing DeRubertis home on the play. The Ducks would then bring two more runs home in the inning, one coming from a walk and the other from a hit by pitch, as they took a 13-3 lead.
  • After DeRubertis singled to start the bottom of the seventh, Wolf hit an inside the park home run to left field. The deeper left field wall allowed Wolf to get all the way home as the Ducks took a 15-3 lead. That score would hold as Stevens secured the victory.
