Sibbach Spins Gem to Send Baseball Over No. 25 Arcadia 9-0

Sophomore twirls first career shutout to lead Ducks in series opener

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 5, 2024) – Sophomore Erik Sibbach twirled a five-hit shutout, classmate Eli Somers homered, and the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team defeated No. 25 Arcadia 9-0 Friday in a MAC Freedom matchup at Dobbelaar Field.

Graduate student Michael Reyes matched Somers with two RBI and all nine Duck starters reached base at least once as Stevens improved to 15-8 on the year and to 7-3 in conference play. The victory snapped Arcadia's two-game winning streak in the all-time series and was Stevens' first win over the Knights in Hoboken since Apr. 8, 2022, which is when the teams last tangled at Dobbelaar Field – the teams played four games in the Keystone State and three in Punta Gorda, Flordia.

Kevin Wheeler singled and walked to lead Arcadia, who fell to 16-8 on the year and to 7-3 in the MAC Freedom. Stevens' victory snapped the Knights' seven-game winning streak and handed Arcadia its first shutout loss since April 13, 2019, when the Knights failed to score in both ends of a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader against Hood.

Sibbach (7-1) silenced the Arcadia bats from the opening pitch, allowing just one baserunner through the first five innings. The Knights entered the contest averaging 13.5 runs across their previous seven contests. The Boxford, Massachusetts native walked one and struck out three in hurling his first career complete game. Four of Arcadia's five hits came in the final two innings.

The Ducks pushed across a pair of runs in the first against Arcadia left-hander Xavier Sjostedt (2-2) and then added four more in the third to chase Sjostedt from the game.

The Rundown
  • After Sibbach retired the Knights in order to begin the game, graduate student Ben Tobio worked a nine-pitch walk to lead off the game for Stevens. Somers doubled down the left field line to move the Ducks' leadoff hitter to third. Tobio came around to score on senior Christian Kreider's groundout.
  • The lead doubled one batter later when Reyes lofted Sjostedt's fifth offering to right, plating Somers, who had moved to third in Kreiser's run-scoring grounder.
  • The Ducks broke the game open in the third. Somers and Kreiser walked to lead off the frame. Reyes singled to load the bases. First-year Garret Wolf plated the first run of the inning with a groundout. Junior Zachary Boykin walked to load the bases a second time and force a pitching change. First-year Tyler Wilke greeted reliever Jack Dovidio with a seeing-eye single through the right side and senior Frank Tonina singled to short to push Stevens' lead to five. First-year Chip Krese lofted a sacrifice fly to drive in the final run of the inning.
  • Matt Donchez had a leadoff single in the second. That marked Arcadia's lone baserunner until Gabe Diaz was hit by a pitch with two outs in the sixth. In between, Sibbach mowed down the next 13 batters to keep the shutout intact.
  • A bases loaded hit by pitch scored Stevens' seventh run before Somers drove Luke Hinkle's 0-1 pitch well beyond the right field wall for his fourth homer of the season.
  • Sibbach worked around a pair of two-out singles in the eighth and two in the ninth to close out the victory. In the process, Sibbach lowered his ERA to a conference-leading 1.46.

Top Performers
  • Somers had both Ducks' extra-base hits.
  • The Ducks recorded two sacrifice flies for the third time this season.

  • In addition to Wheeler, Donchez, Justin Massielo, Diaz and Emilio Pallante each had a hit for Arcadia. All four of the Knights' hits were singles.
